How to qualify for the Kona Ironman Championship


Ironman championship attracts participants from across 64 countries. Though tens of thousands apply for participation, only a few thousands make it to the event. Initially started in 1978, the Ironman grew at a faster speed and ever since the gates were opened for the players with impairments to compete in the disabled category, it started to gain even more acceptance among the public. Furthermore, the event is considered to be the hardest one-day sporting event but even though the event doesn’t get its due share of the promotion, it lacks to none in matters of excitement.


Qualification events:

Around 80,000 people apply for the qualification events of Ironman but only a few make it to the frontline of the race. Qualification is the most basic way to qualify for the Ironman championship, however, the qualification is not confined to it but there are various ways to get qualified. The most challenging sporting day event offers people of all ages, sizes and shapes a fair chance to prove their worth. Through IRONMAN event in the world offers at least one position per age group. More spaces for a race according to registration and age ranges are given. In general, the age group 35-39 and 40-44 are the most crowded, so the best places are provided.

Lottery and Legacy:

The Ironman lottery program continued till 2015 and then it was scrapped. The lottery cost $50 and after selecting the nominal fee of participation. The history of lottery dates back to 1983 in the championship. The lottery program attracted 7,000 buyers each year. There is a legacy program that allows 100 athletes to win Kona once in their lifetime. Though there are regulations on the qualification it’s better than trusting the luck. Eligibility includes a minimum of 12 full-distance IRONMAN-branded races, have never started the IRONMAN World Championship, least one full-distance IRONMAN event in each of the last two years and registered for a full IRONMAN in the current year.

Every week a slot is made available and the auction continues for four weeks in April. The initial bid starts at $10,000. The revenue goes to the Ironman Foundation. The contest can be won by anyone and there is no hidden rule applicable to the auction. So if you don’t mind spending, the Auction starts in April.



Not just the participants with impairments but the event has a special place for the armed and military personnel. It has slots available for the defense department. This personnel can come from any participating nation. Alone in 205, California offered 20 slots to the military division of the 2015 IRONMAN World Championship. Though there are various ways of qualifying to the Ironman championship, it all boils down to one thing; does one have what it takes to lift the title and if you have it then nothing can stop you from grabbing your moment.


The qualification of the Kona Ironman Championship is of different kinds. From qualifying events held around the world to the eBay auction, the slots are available for the potential participants to avail. With this year’s event approaching faster, it remains to see who is set to lift the title.
